Omicron variant of COVID-19 confirmed in Halton and Durham regions cases
The Omicron Health region has revealed the first case of a child and a woman in association with COVID-19 outside of Eastern Ontario.
The woman in her 20s and the child in their 30s first presented to their respective physicians on March 12. A follow-up appointment was scheduled on the same day with their family physician as per normal protocol.
On March 31, the patient’s medical team advised the family physician they had two more patients showing signs consistent with COVID-19, making their original decision to isolate the child and mother urgent.
“They are in isolation within the hospital and are only meeting with their families,” says Omicron Health CEO Dr. Michael Miller. “We will provide updates as they become available.”
The Omicron Health region is currently home to approximately 1,500 people, including more than 500 staff members, with the latest numbers from the Department of Community Health indicating the region has only one confirmed COVID-19 case.
“The latest numbers do not give any indication as to whether our population currently has the virus or not,” says Miller. “This new case of COVID-19 outside of Eastern Ontario could be a positive sign that our region is not the epicenter and might provide a message to other regions and other communities to be vigilant.”
The Halton Regional District confirmed 11 more cases on April 5, bringing their total to 33 and the Durham Region has confirmed three new cases of COVID-19 on April 26.
The Omicron Health region has confirmed the first two cases of COVID-19 outside of Eastern Ontario.
The first case is a 30-year-old woman in her 20s, who recently travelled through the United States. She presented to her physician on March 12 with a fever, shortness of breath and a dry cough on the right side of her chest.
