The Westwood community wants to make it more sustainable. There’s a school in the neighborhood, a big fire station and a grocery store. But the neighborhood is also full of homeless people and the occasional meth dealer.

Westwood was awarded $1.5 million, while Baldwin Park, Gardena and Compton received $1 million each. The nine communities are:

Baldwin Park

Baldwin Park is a community of less than a half-million people in the southeast section of Los Angeles County. In 2010, it ranked sixth among Los Angeles County low-income neighborhoods in terms of median household income, at $36,823. Westwood residents had a median household income of $57,100.

The city of Baldwin Park is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States, with more than 4,300 residents and just over 1,000 businesses.

Gardena is about 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in the Montebello area, on what was the U.S.-Mexico border. It had a population of about 19,000 in 2010, and was ranked 13th among Los Angeles County low-income neighborhoods in terms of median household income, at $38,093.
