An employee at the church where pastor Brad Leithauser’s wife is a member told the congregation on Sunday that his wife had been diagnosed with a mental health condition that could leave her unable to lead the church effectively.

The story came as church members who believe “Christians shouldn’t be treated the same as Muslims” are being told they could be excommunicated from the church for criticizing its pastor – Brad Leithauser.

Christianity Today reports,

“For days, the congregation of Leithauser’s church has been waiting for a detailed report from the pastor’s attorney regarding the claims made by the woman who claims to have been sexually assaulted in an apparent ploy to destroy his reputation. The pastor’s attorney is now expected to provide the evidence that will determine church members’ fate.

“If the allegations are proven, members of his congregation, or anyone else who believes Christians shouldn’t be treated the same as Muslims, could potentially face a churchwide excommunication because of the complaint filed by one of his constituents.”

The claims made by the church member first emerged when the church learned that one of the pastor’s family members was diagnosed with a mental illness that could leave her unable to lead the church effectively.

After learning this, the church said a meeting was held to address the issue before the church member was expelled from the congregation. The church did not have any comment as of press time.

Meanwhile, the husband of the church member is blaming it on Leithauser’s family.

“When someone in the family is sick, instead of doing something, they want to make sure they cover them up and make sure anyone who would say anything is excommunicated. That doesn’t sound like Christianity to me,” said Leithauser who has been married to the church member for
